Crafting Olympic Rings

Subject: Youth Crafts

With the excitement of the Olympic Games upon us, we invite our low-vision and blind youth to join in the celebration with a fun and creative craft activity: making your own Olympic rings! This activity is designed to be accessible and enjoyable, using simple, tactile materials. Let's get started!

Materials Needed:

  • Paper (preferably thick or textured for easy handling)
  • Tracing tools (a cup, cookie cutter, or paper bowl)
  • Scissors (safety scissors if needed)
  • Glue or double-sided tape
  • Markers or paints (optional for coloring)

Steps to Create Your Olympic Rings:

  1. Prepare Your Materials: Gather all the materials you need for the project. Ensure your workspace is clear and organized, with all items within easy reach.
  2. Trace the Circles: Use your chosen tracing tool (cup, cookie cutter, or paper bowl) to create circles on the paper. To do this, place the tracing tool on the paper and carefully trace around it with a marker or pencil. If you are using different sizes, start with the largest and work your way down.
  3. Cut Out the Circles: After tracing the circles, carefully cut them out. For blind or low-vision individuals, you can ask a helper to assist or use tactile scissors that provide better control. Ensure each circle is cut smoothly.
  4. Arrange and Connect the Rings: The Olympic symbol consists of five interlocking rings in the following order from left to right: blue, yellow, black, green, and red. Arrange your circles in this pattern. To connect the rings, overlap each circle slightly over the next one. Use glue or double-sided tape to secure them in place.
  5. Optional: Color Your Rings: If you want to add color, use glitter, feathers or other items that can be pasted on to decorate each ring according to the Olympic colors mentioned above. This step can also be done with the help of a family member or friend, ensuring the correct colors are used.
  6. Final Touches: Once your rings are connected and colored, allow them to dry completely if you used glue. After drying, you can display your Olympic rings on a wall, door, or any other place you'd like to showcase your artwork!
